Despite growing acceptance for LGBTQ people, sport remains an area where discrimination is rife. A recent study called Out On The Fields found that 80% of participants had experienced or witnessed homophobia while playing or watching sport.
In an effort to encourage diversity and challenge discrimination in sport, LGBTQ-inclusive hockey club the Perth Pythons have created a naked calendar featuring some of Australia’s top hockey players.Pride In Hockey 2018 was shot at Swanbourne Beach, a nudist beach in Perth, and stars a mixture of amateur and professional hockey players baring all in the name of equality. One of these is Dylan Wotherspoon, a player for the Australian Kookaburras who posed as Mr December for the calendar, who believes that there is “no place in sport” for discrimination – and that includes homophobia. As an Australian hockey player, I’m proud to support this project,” he said.“Your sexuality does not define your skill or commitment – and yet homophobia stops many LGBTI people from participating in sport. Sport should be inclusive for everyone.”Money raised by the calendar will go towards the Perth Pythons’ projects to make sport more inclusive for everyone.
